Personal Trainer Portland: Strengthen The Back Muscles

If you are sitting all day, you need to stretch and strengthen your back muscles. You don’t just have to do resistance training with weights to do this, but it is recommended to add that to your routine. You can also strengthen the back with isometric contractions (yoga positions like plank), but also with other core stability training. If you would like to learn more about this type of training and exercises to do, contact your personal fitness trainer and let them know what you are looking for.

Portland Personal Training: Stressed Because You Missed Your Workout

If you are getting stressed out because you are going to miss your fitness workout with your workout partner or personal trainer, I totally understand where you are coming from. I am going to tell you that it is totally okay! I have gone through that phase and to be honest with you, it is no big deal. You have the entire week to workout, and if for some reason that meeting went too long, something unexpected came up or your significant other wants to just hang out, your body will survive. Missing one day of exercise is not going to make you lose all of those great results. I know it feels great to sweat and just have an awesome workout, but sometimes it just is not going to happen and that is okay. Just make it up!

Portland Oregon Fitness: You Need A Strong Core

If you are someone who sits at a desk job for most days of the week, your hip flexors are getting a workout, but your core is getting weak. If you were to work with a professional fitness trainer to show you some exercises to stretch your lower back & hip flexors and strengthen your core & gluteus muscles, pain and discomfort associated with back pain and prolonged sitting can be relieved. Make it a point to strengthen you body, especially your core muscles. By doing so, you will be practicing prevention and be on your way to becoming healthier and stronger.

Portland Oregon Personal Trainer: Muscles Need Rest Too

If you are working with a personal trainer or have a workout partner and they are helping you reach your personal fitness bests and you are doing awesome in the gym, you need to rest your muscles. You may be strong, have awesome muscular endurance and are putting on some lean muscle, you still need to rest. If you are lifting hard seven days per week, it is just a matter of time until your body starts to give up or succumb to over-training. If you can at least take one day off from lifting and maybe just go for a hike, your body will appreciate it.
Remember, you don’t grow in the gym, you grow when you are having dinner, watching a movie and resting.

Portland Oregon Personal Trainer: What is a Forced Negative weight training move?

When you are lifting weights and your goal is to really fatigue the muscle, some individuals will want to to do force negatives.  A force negative is when you are doing a set and repetitions and you are no longer able to do the concentric (positive) contraction, so your workout partner will lift that phase of the weight for you (you have to now bring it down slowly). This is called a forced negative (eccentric). This is an advanced move and should not be done by the novice or intermediate weight lifter. Your muscles need to be highly conditioned to withstand such a contraction, so use caution.

Portland Fitness: The Next Big Sports Drink

So what is the next big sports drink? The one thing I am going to tell you is that it is natural and it has been used for a long time and the fitness industry is just catching on to it. So what is is? Well, it is Coconut Water. Yes, I know! I sounds too good to be true, but this water has great electrolyte properties that are excellent when doing activities that involve a lot of perspiration and respiration. For one, it tastes pretty good and it only has 50 calories per 8 fluid ounces, and those calories are packed with vital nutrients that your body needs to maintain proper hydration. Go to your store and try some out. After a great workout, having an ice cold glass or can/bottle of this coconut water is just amazingly refreshing.

Portland Personal Trainer: When to Increase the Cardio Intensity

When your diet is going well and your resistance training is starting to show results, then lets look at the cardio component. In my last post I said you need to do weights to incresae your lean body mass, decrease body fat percentage and boost your metabolism. All that is very true, but when you are starting to lean out, then I want you to step up the cardio component. Meaning, I want you to increase the intensity in order to get you a little bit leaner or to lost that extra few pounds. It is all about timing when to do the certain components, there is a system to this madness, so you just need to known when to add the right components.
