Read and Ride Programs Understand the Connection Between Movement and Learning
Science is cool!
Science has offered us so many exciting discoveries throughout the history of the world. Some of the latest science shows that movement and learning have a pretty cool relationship. The Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) says that studies show that physical movement actually enhances cognitive processing. Research is showing that kids actually learn better when they are moving. This movement can occur during times before and after the learning takes place, or it can occur during the learning.
Movement while learning
Many schools have implemented Read and Ride programs based on these scientific revelations. I have been working on a bike that will allow them to comfortably read a book while riding a bike because it has a built-in book stand. They can use this stand for a book or a tablet. According to research, this will enhance their cognitive processing of the material and therefore their reading comprehension levels will increase. The kids are getting exercise and learning at the same time. The benefits of this technology are very exciting!
Let’s take it a step further…
Not only does my bike provide them with an easy way to read while riding (and thereby harness the power of movement and learning), but it also produces electricity! Yep, electricity! Fast Company wrote about the work I’m doing and how it is giving kids the opportunity to also learn about the transfer of energy, renewable energy, and how much energy it takes to produce 100 watts (hint – you will be tired). In fact, lately the press has really been picking up on my developments. Mental Floss wrote about it too. I’m really looking forward to installing it and seeing where it goes.
